This property is perfect for guests looking for a peaceful retreat and is just a short drive away from the picturesque harbour and beaches of St Ives. The The Lodge is a delightful detached property within the owner’s grounds, and sits in a large, lawned garden with a patio and covered terrace area, perfect for unwinding after a day exploring. Complete with new shower room in 2020.
The A30 is within easy reach, ensuring easy access to west Cornwall and the rugged north coastline. Take the scenic coastal train from nearby St Erth station right into St Ives, or there are park and ride facilities available a mile away. St Ives is home to the Tate Art Gallery and the Barbara Hepworth Museum, as well as having winding streets full of small shops, galleries, restaurants and cafés. The wide estuary, sand dunes and long sandy beaches of Hayle stretches along the coast to Godrevy Lighthouse, Gwithian and Portreath beyond. Just a short drive will take you to Land’s End, Penzance, Sennen Cove and Newquay.
Birdwatchers will love the nearby marshes at Marazion and the Hayle Estuary, which both attract bird enthusiasts from around the UK. The area attracts some amazing wildlife including dolphins, basking sharks, seals and sea birds. There are a number of local pubs serving good food, and a nearby garden centre which serves breakfast. National Trust gardens, coastal walks, golf, cycling, water sports and horse riding are all available locally. The area is great for summer holidays, and also appeals to visitors who love to explore the quiet stormy beaches in the winter months. Beach 3 miles. Shop and restaurant 1 mile, pub ¼ mile.
The Lodge has no WIFI, so unable to check timetables, train times, book theatre tickets etc. The seating and beds were comfortable and the linen of good quality. It was in a quiet location with a lovely big secluded garden, ideal for children and dogs. The Lodge was clean inside, to a reasonable standard, with no trace of dog hairs. Storage was limited to some racking and a single wardrobe in the second bedroom. Also bedside cabinets each side of the beds. To compensate, there are plenty of hooks to hang your clothes. There is a large area to hang coats, store shoes and suitcases as you go in the door. The cupboards smelt a bit musty, but weren,t damp. The bathroom is a bit contained, the electric shower adequate, but only about 3 foot square, the sliding doors to the shower are a bit temperamental. Outside are lots of cobwebs, but it is the countryside. There is a good undercover seating area. The driveway was a bit tight to turn into, especially if you have a big car, and you have to manoeuvre your car out again. All in all, it is very good value for the price paid. I enjoyed doing the jigsaws provided.
Having stayed at the lodge for a week we were very disappointed for a number of reasons. Firstly it is quite run down, this is apparent before you enter the lodge. On entry the smell hits you, it’s a mixture of damp and wet dog, much like a garden shed. Even after having the windows open and spraying with air freshener (everyday!) this never went. It is cold, the only source of heat being electric heaters with aren’t ideal when you have young children around. The bathroom is tiny and the shower is just awful; It’s very small both ways, the doors don’t open properly and anyone taller than 5 ft 8 will struggle, It was also quite dirty, had no extractor fan and a window that was impractical to open. The kitchen is in need of modernisation, it even smelt inside the cupboards. Although it is generally well equipped, there is no dishwasher or washing machine. There is no real place to store clothes, the only one being a small wardrobe in the 2nd bedroom meaning you are living out of a suitcase for a week. Any clothes that touched the floor where then also covered in dog hairs. The doors and windows are single glazed, which will be adding to the coldness and the damp in the lodge, and the lock on the door doesn’t feel very secure. We found lots of wildlife in the lodge including a grass hopper in the bedroom, a beetle in the blankets, loads of spiders and also a few wasps. The drive is quite small and shared with the main house, it would probably benefit from losing some of the garden to make the drive bigger and also gates so you can secure the garden. The drive situation did mean when the owner had people over our car was then blocked in, several times in the week we were there. The location is excellent, close to carbis bay and st. ives and was able to visit many different places easily. Overall the lodge is extremely disappointing and needs a serious amount of work to bring it up to an acceptable standard.
We had such a wonderful time in Cornwall and The Lodge was perfect for our family, 2 young girls and our beloved Labrador. It was cosy and comfortable and a short drive away from a fabulous pub and the beautiful Porthkidney, a dog friendly beach which we absolutely loved! We would certainly return.
Nice location and brilliant hosts. Garden is huge and great for dogs, only thing missing is a washing machine
The Lodge is in a great location, set back in a nice garden. On arrival the place was very cold (possibly we were the first guests this year?) and took a while to warm up using just the three electric heaters as the only source of warmth. The property was well equipped and the beds very comfy however, the biggest let down was the bathroom. It was very small, the window wouldn't shut properly, there was mould all over the ceiling and around the shower enclosure. The doors to the shower were also very precarious, the shower very weak and in general it wasn't very clean and is in need of a refurb. That said, we enjoyed our week and it is a good location to explore the area
Our stay September, 2019
For a holiday let the lodge was nicely situated in pleasant gardens and not to far from Hayle and St lves. It would have been nice if the bathroom was bigger and WiFi was in the lodge
