The area is also renowned for its North to South Coast cycle trail from Portreath to Devoran, passing through further areas of unspoilt natural beauty along disused Victorian tram lines. The area has World Heritage status with engine houses and other artefacts from past mining days, dotted around the region. Portreath beach is a great place to relax, it is family friendly and supervised by lifeguards during the main season. The wide sandy beach, with the famous Gull rock rising from the sea, is a popular body boarding and surfing haven. Portreath has a good selection of pubs, shops, a bakery, post office and grocery store, plus several beach cafés and takeaways. Head south and you reach Gwithian and Godrevey Lighthouse perched on its rocky outcrop, the perfect place to spot wildlife including seals, dolphins and an array of bird life. The wide expanse of sand dunes and beach at nearby Hayle attracts bird spotters from around the world. The bustling town of St Ives is a 20-minute drive, with its gorgeous beaches and pretty harbour. This is a Yes artist’s haven with many popular galleries, including the Tate Modern.
